To lay the groundwork for a nationwide structure, experts from these regions and administrations collaborated, aiming to promote and expand the sport. Professionals in the sector have witnessed a growing participation of boys and girls in judo classes. The sport has become a platform where locals and refugees can come together, train, improve physical fitness, and foster connections.

 

Experts emphasize that judo in Ethiopia has been a powerful tool for supporting youth and contributing to a more equitable society. Although the country has yet to produce high-performance athletes, judo is now gearing up to reach its full potential. Presently, there are ten Judo Sport Clubs in the capital, boasting a larger number of athletes compared to any of the other six regions. However, promising strides are being made in Oromia, Dire Dawa, Sidama, and Somali regions as they strive to develop more judo athletes.

 

Various judo representatives, including international instructor Wendemu Desalegn (Master), Ethiopian Judo Federation President, Tesfaye Ejersa (Instructor), the Founder and Owner of Tesfa Judo Club, and others have come together to further promote judo sports and strengthen the federation’s activities.

 

Wendemu says that judo’s reputation in Ethiopia is currently limited but stresses that it has been a popular Olympic sport worldwide for over 60 years. He believes the sport offers tremendous potential as a powerful tool for social cohesion and youth empowerment through discipline.
